Truck rollover spills 36 sheep

Cache County Sheriff’s deputies responded Thursday evening to a rollover crash involving a tractor trailer hauling 36 cattle to JBS Swift in Hyrum. The driver, 64-year-old Michael Westmoreland from Plymouth was southbound from 3200 South on 1200 West.
Sheriff’s officials say visibility from the fog at the time of the accident was zero. The driver was reportedly traveling at a slow rate of speed due to the fog. Sheriff’s Lt. Chad Jensen said the passenger side tires of the rig left the roadway, causing the truck and trailer to roll on its side and come to a rest in a nearby field.
Deputies closed 1200 West between Hyrum and Nibley due to the fog and the crash. Smithfield livestock Auction was contacted and responded with temporary cattle gates to pen the cattle as they were taken from the trailer.
Utah Highway Patrol troopers responded and assisted with traffic control. The Hyrum Fire Department also responded and were able to cut the trailer open to release the cattle. Jensen said that among the 36 sheep in the trailer only one was killed and one was injured. The cattle were later transported to JBS Swift.
