Driver killed in multi-vehicle crash in Sardine Canyon

February 2nd, 2010 @ 4:19pm

WELLSVILLE -- A man was killed in a four-vehicle crash at the entrance of Sardine Canyon Monday night.

Utah Highway Patrol troopers said the driver of a Ryder rental truck crossed the center line into oncoming traffic and hit a yellow car.

The driver of that car, 54-year-old Robert Smith of Wellsville, was killed instantly.

Two 17-year-olds in an Audi were critically injured.

A 22-year-old woman driving a third car was released from the hospital with no significant injuries. The woman's car rear-ended Smith's car when it was hit by the moving truck.

The driver of the moving truck was treated for minor neck injuries and released.

A multi-vehicle collision in Sardine Canyon on Monday night left one person dead and two others in extremely critical condition. Utah Highway Patrol officials say a southbound Ryder moving truck suddenly crossed the center line of U.S. Highway 89/91 near mile post 14 and impacted two northbound passenger cars head on at about 5:15 p.m.

Robert L. Smith, 54, of Wellsville, who was driving a 2001 yellow Saturn two-door coupe, died instantly from the impact and was extricated by firefighters and a state medical examiner before being transported to a state medical office where he will undergo an autopsy. Smith was the only occupant in the Saturn.

The other vehicle that was impacted by the truck was a black 1991 Audi which, according to UHP Lt. Lee Perry, was driving nearly parallel to the Saturn in the outside northbound lane when it was impacted. The driver, Robert Watson, 17, of Garland, and passenger, Michael Higley, 17, of Tremonton, were both transported to hospitals after suffering significant injuries.

“The passenger was airlifted to McKay-Dee Hospital in extremely critical condition with head injuries,” said Perry. “Watson was airlifted from here to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray and he has extreme upper body trauma.”

A third passenger car was also involved. The driver, a 22-year-old woman, was quickly released from the hospital with no significant injuries. Perry said she was driving behind the Saturn and rear-ended it when it was struck by the moving truck.

The driver of the Ryder truck is reported to be 36-year-old Jason Hernandez from Tooele. He was treated for minor neck injuries and released Monday evening. Perry says the incident is still under investigation and that no charges have been issued.

“The Ryder truck was southbound in the outside lane and we don’t know why but he cut across into the northbound lane and made impact with the two passenger cars,” said Perry.

Dozens of emergency vehicles responded to the scene including investigators from the Utah Department of Transportation. Both southbound and northbound traffic was restricted to one lane in each direction and traffic was backed up for at least two hours after the crash. UHP shared only preliminary information Monday night. Cleanup continued for several hours after the crash.
